Blog 4-Caroline Almagno

For the reading Amazing Grace I am pulling some quotes from the text and find their meaning and relevance.

My first quote that I found importance in was "Crack-cocaine addiction and the intravenous use of hero, which children I have met here call "the needle drug" are woven into the texture of existence in Mott Haven. Nearly 4,000 hero injectors, many of whom are HIV-infected, live here."(4). I think this quote is important because no kids should have to be exposed to drugs that can put them in danger and they know what heroin is at a young age. There are children knowing people who are dying from HIV and one quarter of the women of Mott Haven who are testing for HIV are testing positive. I think it is scary for young children to be exposed to this at a young age and they are losing people in their lives because of drugs and infection from doing those drugs.

My second quote stood out to me because these kids are going through a lot at home and could be scared going to school or coming home from school. When there are shootings continually happening they are scared to be going out and that can be traumatizing for students when they are losing people in their lives one after another. My quote is "In early July of 1993, shortly before the first time that I visited the neighborhood, three more people were shot in 30 minutes unrelated murders in the South Bronx... A week later, a mother was murdered and her baby wounded by a bullet in the stomach while they were standing on a South Bronx"(5).

My last quote that I found relevance to is " Depression is common among children in Mott Haven. Many cry a great deal but cannot explain exactly why.Fear and anxiety is common. Many cannot sleep Asthma is the most common illness among children here. Many have to struggle to take in a good deep breath"(4) I found relevance to this quote because it shows how tough life is for these students is and sometimes they don't understand why they are feeling the way they are feeling and it will probably make it tough on teachers as well because they want to help but the students cant express how they are feeling.

This photo represents the way these students are feeling but they just can't express why.
