Privilege Power and Difference- Caroline Almagno

For the reading Privilege Power and Difference by Alan Johnson I am choosing to pick some quotes and explain the meaning and the relevance of them. This reading is about the trouble surrounds issues of difference in society, gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, as well as social class.

"from scientific research to passionate memoirs, documents this trouble and leaves no doubt that it causes enormous amounts of injustice and necessary suffering" This quote is showing that there is a lot of injustices in society and it is relevant to  society because there has been research and memoirs as well as documents about the issues of gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, as well as social class and we still see inequality.

My next quote is going to be important because it shows how we still have issues with these topics. " All of us are part of the problem. There is not way to avoid it as long as we live in the world. But we could also make ourselves part of the solution if only we knew how" I believe that this quote is important because if we want change in gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, as well as social class we need to be part of the solution. If there was a solution then everyone would have to be apart of the solution and without people helping with the change then it could make it easier to change the issues and make everything equal for everyone no matter their gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and social class.

Another quote I found importance in was " The clerk won't as me for my three kinds of ID before accepting my check or accepting my credit card. But all these indignities that my whiteness protects me from are apart of her everyday existence. And it doesn't matter how she dresses or behaves or that she's an executive in a large corporation" I found importance in this quote because it shows how people treat others depending on the color of their skin. This woman describes that she has some "whiteness" and I infer that she has some color but because she has "whiteness" to her she doesn't get treated the same a person of color would get treated because they are assuming that she is white. I believe that everyone should be able to get the same treatment and it doesn't matter what kind of job you could have or how wealthy or poor you are. She can dress how she would like and behave how she would like because they aren't going to ask for an ID because they assume that she is white.

This image is representing the importance of unity and showing that coming together is going to give the world power no matter of what race, gender, sexual oriented, social class, or ethnicity you are.

  1. I really liked how you described why the woman who would never get checked for ID because the clerk thought she was white and we can't assume that people are a certain race. I also liked the photo you chose to represent this reading.
